Troubleshooting a Sudden WiFi Slowdown
What really happens
If your Internet connection suddenly slowing down, then before calling our service team, there are several steps you can take to determine it’s your WiFi configuration or your Yomura service.
At Yomura Fiber, we pride ourselves on delivering consistent high-speed internet, but even the best fiber connection can be affected by local WiFi issues.
Why Your WiFi Might Be Slowing Down
The most common causes of sudden WiFi slowdowns are:
- Channel overlap with neighboring networks
- Poor router placement in your home
- Interference from other electronic devices
- Outdated router firmware
Identifying Channel Congestion
If one day your WiFi is working perfectly then the next it’s suddenly gone slow. Often, it’s your neighbors. When a new router is setup or someone changes their WiFi settings then their signal can suddenly compete with yours.
Modern routers operate on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency bands. Each band is divided into channels. If your router and your neighbor’s are using the same channel then they compete for bandwidth which causes a slowdown for you and your neighbor.
How to Fix Channel Overlap
- You can download a WiFi analyzer app to see which channels are in use.
- Check your router’s settings using the router’s app or visiting the router’s admin page.
- Navigate to wireless settings and manually select a less crowded channel
- For 2.4GHz networks, channels 1, 6, and 11 are recommended as they don’t overlap with each other
Optimizing Router Placement
Your router’s position significantly impacts its performance. For best results:
- Place your router in a central location
- Keep it elevated (not on the floor)
- Avoid placing it near metal objects, microwaves, or thick walls
- Try to maintain line-of-sight between your router and most-used devices
If you’ve tried these solutions and still experience slow speeds, our Yomura Fiber support team is just a call away. We’re committed to helping you get the most out of your high-speed fiber connection.
