The Environmental Impact of the Internet
We tap, click, swipe – without a second thought. Kitchen utensils, clothes, coffee, even an entire home’s worth of furniture – all ordered in seconds. But let’s not forget the environmental impact of the internet.
We all know that data centres have an impact. But the critical question is what are we doing about it? ISP’s have to look at their infrastructure; and our choice of refrigerant, cooling systems and not least our choice of power supplies make biggest differences. We have to make the greenest choices possible.
How Yomura Is Taking Responsibility
At Yomura, sustainability is a priority in every aspect of our operations. We’re making sure our environmental impact is the best we can.
- Refrigerant: We’ve phased out Freon (R22), which is a CFC. Freon rises and breaks apart from UV energy, releasing a chlorine radical. The Cl radical rips oxygen from ozone, forming ClO. ClO breaks down, freeing Cl· (radical) again. One radical can destroy thousands of environmentally important ozone molecules – so we replaced it with R407C in 2016. R407C is a non ozone-depleting refrigerant.
- Lighting: LED lighting is used throughout our facilities cutting energy waste.
- Power Supplies: Our 80Plus Titanium-certified power supplies ensure that nearly every watt of energy is used efficiently, reducing unnecessary power draw.
- Cooling Systems: Data centers have huge cooling demands. By implementing intelligent airflow design and energy-efficient cooling we’ve lowered our power consumption.
Internet infrastructure will always require energy – but we are responsible to make every difference we can. At Yomura, we understand that it isn’t just about faster speeds and stronger connections – it’s also about being responsible global citizens.
