Why Cable Routers Won’t Work
When you setup your Yomura Fiber internet service, you need to choose the right router for optimal performance. Many new customers ask whether they can use their existing cable router with our fiber optic service. The short answer is no – but understanding why requires looking at how these different internet technologies connect to your home.
Ethernet vs. Coaxial
At Yomura Fiber, we use Ethernet which we supply from an optical network terminal (ONT) that we install in your home. This is fundamentally different from cable internet services, which use coaxial connections. This distinction is what makes cable routers incompatible with our fiber service.
Cable routers are specifically designed with a coaxial input that connects to cable internet infrastructure. These routers simply lack the appropriate input port needed to connect to our fiber network’s ethernet handoff. Attempting to connect a cable router to our fiber service would be like trying to plug a USB device into an HDMI port – the connectors are physically incompatible.
Why You Need a Gigabit WiFi Router
For Yomura Fiber service, you’ll need a Gigabit WiFi router with an ethernet WAN port. These routers are designed to:
- Connect directly to the ethernet cable from our ONT
